Essay: "Overzealous Police Actions Vs. Occupy America Protesters Is Becoming Reminiscent of Kent State Shootings"

Essay: "Overzealous Police Actions Vs. Occupy America Protesters Is Becoming Reminiscent of Kent State Massacre"

On May 4, 1970, anti-war protesters at Kent State college in Pennsylvania were fired upon by trigger happy national guard soldiers. This event was set to song by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young with their song "Ohio". Forty-one years later, Occupy Wall Street and other Occupy protesters across the country are being strong-armed and brutalized by an overzealous police presence against peaceful non-violent protests asserting freedom of speech and freedom of assembly on behalf of the disappearing middle-class and the have-nots; and against the politically powerful corporations and the richest one percent. This week (I write this on 12:02 a.m. Eastern Time Nov. 24, 2011) a ruthless policeman tried to dissuade and intimidate peaceful protesters by blatantly spraying copious amounts at pepper spray on a crowd of defiant OWS protesters at a university in California before they could pitch tents on campus. Instead of scattering the protesters, the arrogance of this brutal and sadistic cop had the opposite of the intended effect. Days later, there are more protesters on this campus than before this incident. At the very least, the power-hungry cop should lose his job for abusing his authority. Hopefully these protests will effect change. In Boston, the powers that be won't allow winter gear like tents for these determined, idealistic protesters. Something has to be done about economic and social inequities and the canyon-sized gulf between the haves and have-nots in this country.

Essay: "Personhood Vote Fails in Mississippi"

Essay: "Personhood Vote Fails in Mississippi"

The attempt to legally redefine life as "beginning at conception" in Mississippi by fanatical anti-choice religious conservatives has failed. A majority of voters has rejected the referendum. If the "personhood" attempt passed, and life was legally, but not necessarily scientifically defined at conception; not only would abortion in all cases have been outlawed, but so would many forms of contraception and lifesaving medical procedures as well. Unfortunately, according to an article I read on Yahoo, the same right-wing religious fanatics have placed a similar "personhood" initiative in six other states. I hope the personhood movement loses and loses big anywhere and everywhere it rears its ugly head.

Poetry: "Corporations Aren't People"

Poetry: "Corporations Aren't People"

Corporations are not people
They don't have a mind
They don't deserve the tax breaks
That politicians find.
Corporations are not people
They can't go to jail
When they screw the people
By what they do or fail
Corporations are not people
They don't deserve to vote,
Or to influence our leaders
With millions in bank notes
Corporations have no heart
Nor compassion, that is true
Their actions seldom help the many,
But the very few.
I don't care what [Mitt] Romney thinks
Because heartless corporations
Have brought our economy to the brink. (tbc?)

Poetry: "Clowngress: The Jokes on You"

Poetry: "Clowngress: The Joke's On You"

Clowngress, the Joke's on You
Vote for them, you know you're screwed
Count on them to overtax your pay,
While voting for their own payraise.
All the while they're funding wars
Into which your money pours
Tax breaks for the very rich,
While your dreams go in a ditch
Cutting programs you may need
If you're poor they fail to heed
Congress are a bunch of boors
Vote them all right out the door
Take away their unearned perks
For they are a bunch of jerks... (tbc?)

Essay: "Mississippi May Legally Define Life at Conception"

Essay: "Mississippi May Legally Define Life at Conception"

According to the On Point Radio program from Monday October 31, 2011 (available at OnPointRadio.org), in the next week or so (ironically the same time frame as when the 7 billionth human child was born), Misssissippi voters will get the choice to vote whether or not to legally decree a mass of cells to be "human" from the moment of conception. This would not only result in abortion to immediately become illicit in Mississippi and perhaps nationwide (if right-wing judges prevail), but the anti-choice movement will also have a victory in outlawing many forms of contraception. Not only that, but if a would-be mother's life or health is endangered by her pregnancy, the so-called rights of "the unborn" would likely supersede her health and her life.
As expected, backwards thinking, hypocritical conservatives who loudly decry "government interference" in their lives, vocally support "government interference" in matters of the bedroom and the private and Contitutionally legal and private decisions between a woman and her doctor. The government and Bible-thumping religious zealots should have no right to interfere in private bedroom and family planning decisions, especially when the world has seven times as many people as the planet should have (7 billion people to despoil the environment). Also, our government has no business imposing religiosity over science in defining what constitutes human life. (tbc?)
