Essay: "RICO for Wall Street!"

Essay: "RICO for Wall Street!"

The government uses the Racketeering and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) laws to break up outlaw biker gangs, organized illicit drug organizations, and organized crime, among others.
Why can't or won't the Powers that Be use RICO against the Wall Street scammers that benefitted greatly while practically bringing our entire economy and way of life down the toilet?Perhaps this is a rhetorical question, since our government is bought and paid for by
corporate lobbyists. If RICO were used, I'm sure many government officials would likewise be complicit. Also, I have two suggestions about how to possibly save our economy, both of which may or may not be feasible or possible: One, delink the stock market from the rest of the economy. That way, if the stock market crashed it would be business as usual for American workers. Although investors and retirees may suffer. Two,
get out of the 'World Economy' As Soon As Possible. Word is, if Greece or other European powers go bankrupt, our economy will suffer as well. If we stopped these foolish "Free Trade" agreements, we would likely retain more American jobs in this country. With Free Trade, those at the top benefit, while those at the bottom lose out on jobs with a wage they can thrive on. (tbc?)

Essay: "Mourning for the Wrong Person"

Essay: "Mourning for the Wrong Person"

This week the madman and tyrant Kim Jong-Il, despot of North Korea, died of an apparent heart attack. Although he lived in luxury, built up his military and nuke arsenal while his people were allowed to practically starve; many of his beleaguered subjects actually mourned his death. I suppose Jong-Il was perceived as a father figure, and the state propaganda machine made him out to look like a great man in a "cult of personality" rather than the monster he really was. Even so, if someone mistreats you and allows you to suffer and starve, how can you cry over the loss of such a cruel despot. Months ago, when Osama bin-Laden was slain, many Moslem extremists mourned his death. I'll bet some people mourned the deaths of Adolf Hitler and serial killers. How can you mourn the demise of an unrepentant mass murderer?

Essay: "Tom Joad Is Alive And Well in the OWS Movement"

Essay: "Tom Joad Is Alive And Well in the OWS Movement"

In the John Steinbeck novel "The Grapes of Wrath", Tom Joad fought against injustice in Depression era time. Nearly eighty years later, in real life, the modern-day Tom Joads of both genders in the Occupy Wall Street/America (OWS) fight against economic injustice. Risking their health, safety and freedom, they face ridicule from clueless conservatives, arrests by overzealous cops, and indifference by the elite in politics and big business. Although their message is lost on "the 1%" they demonstrate against, for the have-nots, the beleaguered middle-class, the working class, and many others, their message very much resonates. Although in Boston and many other cities their campsites have been cleared, as people in the movement say, "You can't evict an idea."
I recently read an opinion column in which the columnist wrote off the OWS/America movement as "lawless", "mobs". With the way things are now, with the economy in the toilet, and the extreme right-wing of the Republican Party gumming things up by preferring to cut necessary services over taxing millionaires, billionaires, and corporations; the growing canyon between the haves and have-nots; the Citizens United decision which opens the floodgates for unchecked political donations by the well-to-do and corporations; bad political decisions and inactions, etc,. necessitated a response. The OWS, took to the streets in Wall Street and many cities across the country. Although their message is lost to those who are conservative, the Occupiers want a fairer economic climate, a Living Wage rather than a minimum wage, more affordable health care, less student loan debt, to minimize the corrupting influence of money in politics among other things. The OWS movement is a peaceful protest. If the OWS supports a candidate or party, there is potentially thousands of votes to undo the bad decisions and inactions which led to our economic meltdown. Essay: "Overzealous Police Actions Vs. Occupy America Protesters Is Becoming Reminiscent of Kent State Shootings"

Essay: "Overzealous Police Actions Vs. Occupy America Protesters Is Becoming Reminiscent of Kent State Massacre"

On May 4, 1970, anti-war protesters at Kent State college in Pennsylvania were fired upon by trigger happy national guard soldiers. This event was set to song by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young with their song "Ohio". Forty-one years later, Occupy Wall Street and other Occupy protesters across the country are being strong-armed and brutalized by an overzealous police presence against peaceful non-violent protests asserting freedom of speech and freedom of assembly on behalf of the disappearing middle-class and the have-nots; and against the politically powerful corporations and the richest one percent. This week (I write this on 12:02 a.m. Eastern Time Nov. 24, 2011) a ruthless policeman tried to dissuade and intimidate peaceful protesters by blatantly spraying copious amounts at pepper spray on a crowd of defiant OWS protesters at a university in California before they could pitch tents on campus. Instead of scattering the protesters, the arrogance of this brutal and sadistic cop had the opposite of the intended effect. Days later, there are more protesters on this campus than before this incident. At the very least, the power-hungry cop should lose his job for abusing his authority. Hopefully these protests will effect change. In Boston, the powers that be won't allow winter gear like tents for these determined, idealistic protesters. Something has to be done about economic and social inequities and the canyon-sized gulf between the haves and have-nots in this country.

Essay: "Personhood Vote Fails in Mississippi"

Essay: "Personhood Vote Fails in Mississippi"

The attempt to legally redefine life as "beginning at conception" in Mississippi by fanatical anti-choice religious conservatives has failed. A majority of voters has rejected the referendum. If the "personhood" attempt passed, and life was legally, but not necessarily scientifically defined at conception; not only would abortion in all cases have been outlawed, but so would many forms of contraception and lifesaving medical procedures as well. Unfortunately, according to an article I read on Yahoo, the same right-wing religious fanatics have placed a similar "personhood" initiative in six other states. I hope the personhood movement loses and loses big anywhere and everywhere it rears its ugly head.

Poetry: "Corporations Aren't People"

Poetry: "Corporations Aren't People"

Corporations are not people
They don't have a mind
They don't deserve the tax breaks
That politicians find.
Corporations are not people
They can't go to jail
When they screw the people
By what they do or fail
Corporations are not people
They don't deserve to vote,
Or to influence our leaders
With millions in bank notes
Corporations have no heart
Nor compassion, that is true
Their actions seldom help the many,
But the very few.
I don't care what [Mitt] Romney thinks
Because heartless corporations
Have brought our economy to the brink. (tbc?)

Poetry: "Clowngress: The Jokes on You"

Poetry: "Clowngress: The Joke's On You"

Clowngress, the Joke's on You
Vote for them, you know you're screwed
Count on them to overtax your pay,
While voting for their own payraise.
All the while they're funding wars
Into which your money pours
Tax breaks for the very rich,
While your dreams go in a ditch
Cutting programs you may need
If you're poor they fail to heed
Congress are a bunch of boors
Vote them all right out the door
Take away their unearned perks
For they are a bunch of jerks... (tbc?)

Essay: "Mississippi May Legally Define Life at Conception"

Essay: "Mississippi May Legally Define Life at Conception"

According to the On Point Radio program from Monday October 31, 2011 (available at OnPointRadio.org), in the next week or so (ironically the same time frame as when the 7 billionth human child was born), Misssissippi voters will get the choice to vote whether or not to legally decree a mass of cells to be "human" from the moment of conception. This would not only result in abortion to immediately become illicit in Mississippi and perhaps nationwide (if right-wing judges prevail), but the anti-choice movement will also have a victory in outlawing many forms of contraception. Not only that, but if a would-be mother's life or health is endangered by her pregnancy, the so-called rights of "the unborn" would likely supersede her health and her life.
As expected, backwards thinking, hypocritical conservatives who loudly decry "government interference" in their lives, vocally support "government interference" in matters of the bedroom and the private and Contitutionally legal and private decisions between a woman and her doctor. The government and Bible-thumping religious zealots should have no right to interfere in private bedroom and family planning decisions, especially when the world has seven times as many people as the planet should have (7 billion people to despoil the environment). Also, our government has no business imposing religiosity over science in defining what constitutes human life. (tbc?)

Essay: "Police Brutality against Occupy Movement in Oakland"

Essay: "Police Brutality Against Occupy Movement in Oakland"

According to an e-mail I received from MoveOn.com on Wed. 10/26, on Tuesday evening 10/25 a marine veteran of the Iraq war, ScottOlsen was seriously injured by a supposedly 'nonlethal' bullet fired by an overzealous police presence at a peaceful Occupy Oakland protest in California. The projectile fractured Olsen's skull and left him in "critical conditon". In addition, when some protesters attempted to come to his aid, a thuggish policemen apparently deliberately hurled a "flash grenade" at the would-be good Samaritans. It doesn't surprise me that power crazed policemen would abuse their authority to try to quell a protest by unarmed nonviolent protesters expressing their rights of free speech and assembly against the status quo and the powers that be. I'd be willing to bet that if there were a bunch of Wall Street or politically connected white collar criminals, the police would handle them with kid-gloves or leave them alone entirely. Hopefully, the policemen who brutalize peaceful protesters in Oakland and elsewhere will lose their jobs or be prosecuted for misconduct, but I wouldn't count on it happening given other abuses that cops typically get away with in this society. In case you are interested, look up "Oakland Policeman Throws Flash Grenade Into Crowd" on Youtube to see this example of police brutality.

Essay: "War in Iraq to End? I'll Believe It When I See It."

Essay: "War in Iraq to End? I'll Believe It When I See It."

After ten or so years, and untold billions of dollars spent, the war based on the George Dubya Bush administration's lies is supposedly winding down. Iraq is a very dangerous place for our soldiers to be because of a tenacious insurgency, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), plus a terrorist presence that did not exist before Dubya and his neocon-artist advisors decided to avenge his father or get rid of Saddam Hussein under the pretext of nonexistent Weapons of Mass Destruction; or a dubious connection to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The international War on Terror is a flawed concept because terrorism isn't necessarily a government policy. More often than not, terrorism results from perceived or actual mistreatment (i.e. the Intifada by the Palestinians against Israel), or religious fanaticism (al Quaida) or racism (i.e. the KKK). Terrorism can be an individual or group action. No matter how long war is waged or how much money is spent, or how many of our rights we 'must' sacrifice, chances are terrorism will endure in some way, shape or form. On the other hand, it could be argued that the world is better off without despots like Saddam Hussein or Colonel Khadaffi (who was slain this week), but our country cannot afford to take out despots and thrive economically at the same time. Also, why do we subsidize Pakistan when they don't appreciate what we do for them, and at the same time they harbor terrorists who aspire to target Americans; both military and civilian alike? Essay: "Clarence Thomas To Be Investigated?"

Essay: "Clarence Thomas to be Investigated?"

Some on the Democratic side of the aisle are calling for an investigation of Extreme right-wing Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for alleged ethics violations. Among these, are allegedly having ties to individuals whose cases have been before the court, and for allegedly accepting gifts from some of those who may be directly affected by these rulings (such as the egregious and infamous Citizens United decision (which Thomas voted for). If an investigation happens, it is possible that Thomas may be impeached and may be forced to leave the Court before his lifetime tenure is up. By the way, Thomas is also a friend of the Koch brothers. If Clarence Thomas is forced to step down, it could be an opportunity for the Democrats to have more leverage with the conservative-leaning Court. If you recall, Clarence Thomas was accused of having acted inappropriately with a former lawyer colleague, Anita Hill just before he become a Supreme Court Justice. He was vindicated by the old boys club of Congress, but I have always believed that he did what he was accused of. It was a matter of He Said, She Said. If I remember correctly Justice Thomas just barely squeaked by to survive as a Supreme Court nominee. It was a coup by the G.O.P.,because Ted Kennedy was on the nominating committee and the late Bay State Senator had a similar reputation for misconduct toward women. Also, to vote against a black nominee could be construed as racist, even though his extreme right-wing views should have otherwise sunk his nomination (remember the hapless Robert Bork?). (tbc?)

Essay: Herman Cain Connected to Koch Brothers

Essay: "Herman Cain Connected to Koch Brothers"

Republican contender for the Presidency, former pizza mogul Herman Cain is reportedly connected to the billionaire Koch brothers. The Koch brothers are notorious for using their vast wealth to stealthily fund extreme right-wing causes and candidates under the radar, so that the general public is mostly unaware of what they are doing. By spending so much money on ultra-right-wing causes and extremely conservative candidates, the will of the Koch brothers (corporate personhood and arguably corporate fascism against the will and best interest of the Common Man) is more likely to be imposed that it would by less affluent interests, such as the Occupy Wall Street people. The Koch brothers are also the puppetmasters who fund and pull the strings of the Tea Party movement (they are the biggest funders of the Tea Baggers). Herman Cain is associated with the Koch brothers, and it is possible that his calling card, the so-called "9-9-9 Plan (which would tax everyone at a 9% rate) may have come from the Koch brothers or GOP strategists funded by the Koch brothers in some way, shape or form. Although I would hate to see former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (who recently loudly proclaimed the right-wing lie of "corporation are people")become our Commander-In-Chief, I'm hoping the connection between H. Cain and the Koch bros. will sink Cain's chances at our highest office.

Essay: Voter Disenfranchisement

Essay: "Voter Disenfranchisement"

According to the National Public Radio program On Point Radio, as frequently happens, the Republican Party is disenfranchising thousands if not millions of would-be voters such as students, the elderly, the poor, and minorities, among others. Under the pretext of preventing "voter fraud" many states have enacted laws where IDs are required in order to vote. That is well and good, but not everyone (such as the poor or homeless) has the funds or access to purchase an ID card. To make matters worse, many states have disallowed student IDs for young voters in a cynical intent to gain an advantage by GOP candidates, who might otherwise be voted against by young students and other segments of the voting population, who would be more likely to vote Democratic. Essay: "Nomination Abomination"

Essay: "Nomination Abomination"

I haven't been paying much attention to the Republican debates and I certainly won't waste my time watching to them or listening to them. In my opinion, the rogues gallery of candidates is just a Nomination Abomination. For the most part, all of the candidates advocate the same failed policies which got us into this huge economic mess: tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, rewarding corporations for downsizing jobs and/or outsourcing jobs abroad, allowing Wall Street corporations and banks to keep bonuses meant to stimulate the economy, doing little or nothing to regulate polluters or abusive/predatory mortgages and foreclosures, making the canyon sized gulf between the haves and have-nots even larger, among many other things. And Mitt Romney (former governor of Massachusetts and who established practical mandatory Universal Health Care here) seems willing to say or do anything to try to become President. He is even advocating sending more troops to Afghanistan or Iraq. These entitled, out of touch elites dismiss the Occupy Wall Street movement as a bunch of spoiled brats or 'haters' of America, when the movement isn't that at all. Also, I hope American voters say Nein Nein Nein! (German for no no no) to pizza man Herman Cain's so- called "9-9-9" tax scheme. From what I heard about it, this scheme will only benefit the well-to-do and will hurt the average Joe and the poor with a 9% sales tax on everything you may want to buy. At least the hated Sarah Palin and the arrogant Newt Gingrich aren't running. (tbc?)

Essay: "Koch Brothers Doing Business with Iran?'

Essay: "Koch Brothers Doing Business with Iran?"

This morning (Thurs. Oct. 13, 2011) I clicked on an e-mail from "The National Memo", associated with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). According to the e-mail message, the billionaire Koch brothers (notorious for contributing vast sums of money to extreme right-wing causes and candidates, including being the major funder of the Tea Party movement) have been doing business with our enemy Iran (a major supporter of international extremist Islamic terrorism). By doing business dealings with Iran, they may be directly or indirectly subsidizing terrorism or violence against Americans or other innocent people. So far, Speaker of the House Boehner has failed to investigate the Koch bros. (perhaps because they are major contributors to G.O.P. favored causes and candidates?) To demand such an investigation takes place ASAP go to: http://dccc.org/twKochBrothers .

Essay: "Ruthless Republicans"

Essay: "Ruthless Republicans"

Most right-wingers equate those who disagree with them (i.e. the Occupy Wall Street ralliers) as "Communists and traitors". They also falsely claim that those on the left (i.e. Obama) "hate America" and only those in the Tea Party, the Hard Right or the so-called 'Born Again' folks are: "true Americans" and they and only they "love America". What bunk! American right-wing conservatism is the biggest sham going. Otherwise, why would it need such Charlatans, frauds and blatant liars as Karl Rove, Pat Robertson, and Rush Limbaugh, among many others, to deceive the populace? It is typical of ruthless conservative con artists to label those who oppose the unjust status quo as "commies, traitors, or as unAmerican", among other slurs. I truly hope the majority (as the Occupy Wall Street calls the "99% of us") represented by the American Dream Movement and the Occupy Wall Street ralliers will change things away from the Abattoir of Broken Dreams and the Dystopia the USA is becoming under the pernicious policies and insidious agenda of the extreme right-wing of the conservative Republican Party, the modern GOP.

Essay: "The American Dream Movement and Occupy Wall Street Rallies"

Essay: The American Dream Movement and the Occupy Wall Street Rallies"

At long last there is a progressive response to the wrongheaded and extreme Tea Party and the propaganda from the conservative con artists of the Hard American Right of the Republican Party. The "American Dream Movement" is an offshoot of the Liberal MoveOn.com organization. In tough times, largely caused by the pernicious policies and insidious agenda of the George Dubya Bush and Extreme Right-Wing of the Republican Party it would behoove those in opposition to this horrible and selfish ideology to oppose its tenets and those who advocate such wrongheaded ideas as Endless War, Tax Cuts for millionaires, billionaires, and corporations who send jobs abroad rather than creating them here, an unjust tax code favoring the well-to -do, severe and ruthless cuts to services and infrastructure, and on and on. (tbc). I am hoping the American Dream Movement and the fledgling Occupy Wall Street rallies will counteract the Right/Wrong, and effect positive changes in favor of the poor, vulnerable and the beleaguered Middle Class, but since those on the Right can and do use their vast money, power and political influence to retain the status quo, it will certainly be an uphill battle for things to change for the better. Essay: "Who Is the Real Enemy"

Essay: "Who Is the 'Real Enemy'?"

Some would say the "enemy" are the terrorists, others would say criminals or illicit drugs, some misguided souls consider 'bleeding heart' Liberals to be the "enemy". I would argue that the real enemy, at least of the Common Man, is the American politician, particularly of the Tea Party or Extreme Right-Wing of the Republican Party. With severe and ruthless cuts to services, tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires who neither need nor deserve them, an unfair and unjust distribution of wealth, scheming to repeal a health care law which actually does something about abuses by the health insurance industry and lack or nonexistent coverage for millions of Americans, endless war, an exorbitant and pretty much pointless endless war(s) policy and erosion of our collective rights, not to mention the demise of the American Dream and the emaciated Middle Class, among many other factors, with friends like the Tea Party and the Extreme Hard Right, who needs enemies?... Essay: "The Affluent and the Indigent"

Essay: "The Affluent and the Indigent"

In these tough times there are two types of people: the affluent and the indigent. Thanks to extreme right-wing policies such as: Endless War(s), the exorbitant Shadow Government known as the Department of Homeland Security, the amorphous War on Terror, short-term thinking by politicians, politically powerful but greedy people and corporate entities, deceitful and/or unethical banks, Wall Street types, ruthless and oft dishonest mortgage foreclosurers , and a tax-averse ideology, among many other factors, there are pretty much the rich, the poor and few in the middle. The American Dream and the Middle Class have both met their demise. If you're at the top of the economic food chain, your golden. If, on the other hand if you are born poor or were formerly in the Middle Class, you're basically shit out of luck (SOL). This is regardless of who is in power, but is much more blatant and cruel if the current crop of the Extreme Right-Wing of the Republican Party has their way with simultaneous tax cuts and ruthless service cuts. There are certain things only the government is capable of doing: hiring police, firefighters, teachers and public education for those who cannot afford private schools, fixing roads and bridges, improving and maintaining infrastructure, subsidizing researchers for new industries and technologies, ensuring the safety of new pharmaceuticals, foods, beverages, and products of almost every kind, having incentives to minimize pollution of air, water and land (if the government is doing its job), passing a sensible energy policy (if the government is doing its job), fighting poverty, hunger and homelessness in the USA (but not necessarily internationally), regulating harmful and/or greedy and/or deceitful and/or dishonest practices of businesses, industry and individuals, national defense, among many other things. If the Tea Party and the Hard Right of the Republican Party has their way many of these very necessary government functions will go away and as a result numerous people living here as citizens in this country will suffer and maybe even die.

"Just Say No to the TEA Party"

"Just Say No to the TEA Party"
"If the TEAParty gets in, the rich, ruthless and powerful will be rewarded, while the poor, vulnerable and powerless will basically be punished."
If you are religious (which I am definitely not) pray that the TEA Party doesn't win the next Presidential election. If you are not religious, hope those Truly Extreme A-holes do not get in. If the TEA Party does win and have their way, the rich, ruthless and powerful will be rewarded, while the poor, vulnerable and powerless will basically be punished. The extreme conservative views of the TEA Party will make our economy worse, not better. They will likely increase exorbitant defense spending and intrusive and expensive privacy ignoring schemes like the Dept. Of Homeland SEcurity. , while dismantling necessary social programs and programs to improve our national infrastructure, like roads, bridges, tunnels, and the like. If they decrease taxes for everyone, including millionaires and billionaires, our nation could go the way of Rome and the Soviet Bloc in the late eighties to early nineties. After all, it takes government revenue to fund teachers, firemen, policemen, roads, bridges, schools, certain hospitals, etc. I would rather pay higher taxes than to live in a Third World country where the rich own everything and the poor have little or nothing. By the way, I fear that many women may vote for the ultra-extreme Michelle Bachmann just because she is a woman without realizing how extreme her conservative con-artist worldview is.

Essay: "Send The Whole Tea Party Packing!"

Essay: "Send The Whole Tea Party Packing!"

The entire Tea Party should be sent home packing. And not merely at the Federal level either. From the Executive branch, Congress, the Judicial branch, to state legislators, to governors, to mayors, to local selectmen, to school boards, to aldermen, and even lowly dog catchers. These people are dangerous, folks. For the sake of ideology, the Tea Party was willing and eager to risk our entire economy, our way of life and our collective Standard(s) of Living. In addition, their holier than thou policies would likely infringe on many of our personal freedoms. But their plan to 'fix the economy' with so-called "cut, cap, and balance" goes way too far. As I see it, "cut, cap and balance" basically punishes the Have-Nots (the poor, vulnerable and less fortunate) for what the Haves and the politically elite caused and enabled to occur with unnecessary "endless wars", a bloated Homeland Security bureaucratic boondoggle, undertaxing millionaires, billionaires, and corporations which blatantly send jobs overseas, and failure to regulate Wall Street thieves, mortgage fraudsters, and greedy banking scammers, among others.

Essay: "Down to the Wire: If Economic Doomsday Occurs, Tea Party Largely to Blame"

Essay: "Down to the Wire: If Economic Doomsday Occurs, Tea Party is Largely to Blame"

In two or so days, if Democrats and Republicans do not come to an agreement to raise the debt ceiling, a worldwide economic doomday could happen. Perhaps radio preacher Harold Camping was right after all. Sort of like how the weird sisters in Shapespeare's McBeth cryptically said that only one "not of woman born" could kill McBeth, when coockoo Camping said the world would end on May 21, 2011 he not only got the date wrong, but the circumstances. He predicted that only "true believers" would survive on that day, but if an economic doomsday occurs it would be due to right-wing stubbornness rather than inevitability. I'm sure the super rich will survive just fine, but as for the rest of us, we're basically screwed and SOL. Perhaps by design, the rich will be even richer while the poor and vulnerable will be allowed to suffer. The Bernie Mad(e)off- with- our- money Wall Street types, those who after all largely caused this mess will be rewarded; while the weak, the sick, the old and disabled (on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other entitlements) will be punished by the hardnosed, callous, right-wing policies and agenda which the conservative con-artists in Congress are trying to coerce Obama and the Democrats to accept.

Essay: "An Economic Butterfly Effect?"

Essay: "An Economic Butterfly Effect?"

According to Wikipedia, the "Butterfly Effect" is the theory that small changes in a point in time can lead to huge, unintended consequences in a future point of time. The current debt crisis could arguably be considered an economic and political 'Butterfly Effect'. If an agreement is made to cut both taxes for the wealthy and services for the poor the following might very well occur: Corporations will hoard money and refuse to hire new personnel; Ordinary people won't spend money other than on real necessities (i.e. food, clothing and shelter and the like), resulting in more layoffs and business closings. Banks won't lend money, so would-be entrepreneurs won't dare establish new small businesses (the main source of new jobs in the American economy). As a result, more people will need government services (i.e. food stamps, unemployment, low-income housing vouchers, Medicare and Medicaid, etc.), but they will be basically SOL because there will be few or no services to be had. There will likely be more hunger, homelessness, crime of every kind, alcoholism and substance abuse, widespread anger, an increase in domestic violence, stress, heart attacks and suicides. Meanwhile, the rich will get even richer and the poor will get even poorer. If things get bad enough, widespread social unrest could very well result. Perhaps all of this and more can result from the rigid, my way or the highway stubbornness of extreme right-wing ideology and the short-term thinking so typical of politicians who care more about being reelected by their base than what is best for their constituents and fellow countrymen.

Essay: "A Ruthless, Heartless, Mean-Spirited Ideology"

Essay: "A Ruthless, Heartless, Mean-Spirited Ideology"

The only thing most politicians can be counted on to do is "Legislative Larceny" : in other words having the gall to vote for pay raises for themselves while screwing over the majority of their constituents and fellow citizens.
The extreme right-wing of the Republican Party, now unfortunately the mainstream of the so-called Grand Old Party (GOP) has a ruthless, heartless and mean-spirited ideology/agenda/policy list which in my view is diametrically opposed to the best interests of the majority of the citizenry and electorate. They openly idolize Ronald Reagan and are eager to reimpose the same failed Supply Side "Voodoo Economics" which trickled down derision rather than affluence as its adherents claimed it would for the majority of us. The agenda of the ultra-conservative con-artists is potentially about to destroy or break the back of the economy by refusing to raise the debt ceiling, cutting benefits for the poor and vulnerable, and refusing to impose that the few wealthy and corporations among us pay their fair share in taxes. They don't care who it hurts. They don't care that our roads, bridges, and infrastructure are starting to crumble. All they seem to care is that one: Obama doesn't get reelected and two: that the rich get even richer and the poor get even poorer. As was the tagline in the movie "V for Vendetta": ' The government should fear the people, not the people should fear the government.'

Essay: "Cleaning Up After Elephants"

Essay: "Cleaning Up After Elephants"

Cleaning up after elephants is never pleasant or fun. It doesn't matter if it's at the circus, the zoo or in Washington, D.C., where the intransigent G.O.P. pachyderms are currently gumming up the works in Congress and many apparently don't care if they ruin the economy for nearly everyone in the process. In the nineteenth century cartoonist Thomas Nast (if I remember correctly) came up with the symbol of the Republican elephant. Today, the extreme right-wing of the Republican Party ought to be symbolized as a big horse's rear end. Anyway, before Obama was elected we had eight years of reckless spending, many years of unneeded tax cuts for politically powerful corporations, millionaires and billionaires. Incidentally, thousands of corporations pay zero in taxes, even ones that outsource jobs abroad or set up headquarters in offshore tax shelters. Thanks to George Dubya Bush, his neocon-artist advisors, and the hard right of the Republican Party, and some Democrats in Name Only (DINOs) we have two exorbitant and unnecessary wars (now three exorbitant and unnecessary wars, if you include Lybia). Thanks to the right-wing Congress, and so-called conservative Democrats we have policies of deregulation which led to the housing meltdown, ruthless foreclosures by banks and the like, and the near demolition of the entire economy by reckless Wall Street firms like Enron, AIG, Financial Freedom, and other greedy, self-serving corporations. In addition, the conservative majority in the Roberts Supreme Court passed the ludicrous Citizens United decision to allow corporations and millionaires and billionaires to anonymously donate unlimited funds to candidates who support their interests at the expense of the interests of the Common Man and the rest of us. The extreme right-wing seems to have a three-pronged agenda: give tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy, cut the social safety net and needed government programs to the bone, and to defeat Obama so their pernicious policies and insidious agenda will easily be approved by a conservative Republican President. Unfortunately, Obama is all too willing to compromise (in other words to cave in) with the uncompromising their way or the highway right-wingers. He should know if he makes a deal with the political Devil we all get burnt. I pity Obama. No matter who became President would have a Herculean task of dealing with a post 9/11 world of unnecessary wars, financial meltdowns, and the incompetent, not so bright policies and agenda of an ultra-right-wing President
named George Dubya Bush. Unless, Bush did all this as a ruse to destroy policies which Democrats advocated and instituted.
If the Republicans allow the domestic and perhaps international economy to be obliterated by refusing to raise the debt limit, they better hope and pray that their constituents and non-constituents alike don't take the fourth paragraph of the Declaration of Independence to heart: "...Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends ("Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"), it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government... "It is their Right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security." Unfortunately, the extreme right-wing fears the TEA Party, which is perhaps 20% of the electorate tops and their wealthy, elite, heartless and ruthless base , more than their minimal concern for the vast majority of us.

Essay: "Shared Sacrifice My Ass"

Essay: "Shared Sacrifice My Ass"

All politicians basically suck. Some suck more than others. In my view, the extreme right-wing of the Republican Party (now the 'mainstream' G.O.P.) sucks most of all. In the latest pissing contest between the Republican Right and the arguably more sensible Democrats, our whole economy may hinge on these jerks coming to some kind of agreement to avoid a nationwide or worldwide financial catastrophe. Hopefully this agreement, if it happens, won't widen the vast gulf between the few politically powerful Haves and the politically powerless and largely ignored Have-Nots. A lot of talk by both the Right, Left, and Middle, the Democrats, the Republicans and perhaps Independents talks a lot about "shared sacrifice". Shared sacrifice is pure BS. It appears obvious that all of the sacrifice is to be borne by the poor, needy and vulnerable among us. All the extreme right-wing seems to care about is preserving tax cuts for their rich base of supporters. Both sides seem to want to win our three unnecessary wars in spite of human and trillions of dollars in economic casualties. Like children, the extreme right-wing appear to prefer the entire economy be obliterated than to risk that Obama might be reelected. As I see it, the Dems policies work for the majority of our collective best interests, while the hard right's policies only work for those who make large political donations or who have already made it in life so could potentially make donations to evade the responsibility of paying their fair share in taxes (particularly millionaires and billionaires).

Essay: "Fireworks Now Legal in RI but still Illegal in Mass.

Essay: Fireworks Now Legal in RI but Still Illegal in Massachusetts

On a recent ride to Rhode Island I noticed a number of places legally selling fireworks such as firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman Candles and a number of other kinds in preparation for the Fourth of July. I heard that M-80s, which are equivalent to a quarter stick of dynomite, are still illegal down there. Firework sales have been going on in New Hampshire for years. I'm sure many repressive Red States openly allow the sale of fireworks, while ruthlessly locking up or executing convicted criminals. However, in the supposedly liberal and 'open minded' Blue State of Massachusetts fireworks continue to be illegal for the use of the average citizenry. Perhaps it is a remnant of the repressive and uptight Puritanism streak which brought us Blue Laws and other arcane rules, regulations, statutes and bylaws, but in my view our state should allow the sale and use of firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman Candles and the like without fear of recrimination from the police or other authorities; especially on Independence Day. Naturally, fireworks should be used safely and not by children under a certain age.

Essay: "A G.O.P. Dystopia?"

Essay: "A G.O.P. Dystopia?"

In science-fiction Dystopia is a world in which, according to the Random House Webster's College Dictionary (1991): "social or technological trends " results in "a greatly diminished quality of life or degradation of values." It is basically a literal Hell on earth or the antithesis of Utopia or paradise. In my view the United States is now or is starting to become a Dystopia disguised as a Utopia, especially for the poor, vulnerable and have-nots. If Wisconsin Congress-man Paul Ryan's evisceration of Medicare happens, if the G.O.P gets a majority in both Houses of Congress, and/or if the next President is a right-wing Republican (and these days the mainstream of the Republican Party is the extreme right-wing) I can foresee our country falling apart for the poor and vulnerable in our society. I can foresee more alcoholism, drug and substance abuse, crime of all kinds flourishing, angry citizenry, a spike in homelessness, more suicides, a sadder, less free and less happy society. We will literally be a Dystopia except for those of us on the wealthy side, especially since most of the jobs to be had are low-paying, unpleasant service professions, which cause stress rather than affluence.

Essay: The Death of Dr. Death

Essay: The Death of Dr. Death

This week (Sunday June 5, 2011) pathologist Dr. Jack Kevorkian passed away at age 83. During the nineteen nineties Kevorkian gained infamy for inventing a machine to administer lethal chemicals to the teminally ill. In the late nineties the cocky physician was tried and convicted of murder after being arrested following one of his 100 some-odd "assisted suicides". he spent about six years behind bars. According to an obituary I read, early in Kevorkian's career he advocated giving Death Row inmates the option of donating their organs to those who could use them. He soon abandoned the idea. He was a hero to those who would rather die than to endure the pain of terminal illness or exist as brain-dead 'vegetables' surviving in an incapacitated comatose state with feeding tubes etc., and a villain to those who oppose euthanasia and likely those in the so-called Pro Life movement. I applaud his courage. I wouldn't want to be in a permanent vegetative state, but on the other hand I wouldn't necessarily want a fallible doctor or other health care professional to determine whether or not I or someone I care for is worth keeping alive in case of illness or tragedy.

Essay: The End of the World, Or Not"

Essay: "The End of the World, Or Not"

Harold Camping, an octegenarian radio preacher for decades has used his supposedly thorough knowledge of the Bible to predict that the apocalypse will occur via earthquake at 6 o'clock p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday May 21, 2011. Before you go out in a frenzied panic, be aware that the eighty-plus year old Camping made a similar prediction in the nineties and it didn't come to pass. A lot of people have made predictions over the years, decades, centuries and eons that the world would end at a certain time and we are still here. for instance, the story of Noah in the Bible. I haven't followed Nostradamis' writings lately, but I'm sure he alluded to the end of the world. The Book of Revelations is perhaps the most well-known description of the apocalypse or so-called 'Judgment Day'. According to many people, the Mayan civilization predicted 2012 as the end of the world. I think we will survive well beyond 2012, unless pollution and Global Warming make the planet uninhabitable or the sun goes supernova millions of years from now. I'm not worried at all about a prediction by a religious fanatic, and neither should you.

Essay: "Should We Have Zero Tolerance For Zero Tolerance?"

Essay: "Should We Have Zero Tolerance For Zero Tolerance?"

In certain school systems the administration and teachers run schools as if they were minimum security prisons rather than a place where learning can be a pleasant experience.
According to the May 14 to May 15 Weekend Edition of the Quincy Patriot Ledger, in Palmer, Massachusetts, a child at the young age of nine years old was called to a "Juvenile Court" for the supposed 'crime' of bringing a toy gun to school. Under a Zero Tolerance policy at the school, bringing a weapon to school is a crime. Since a toy gun looks similar to a real gun, under this callous and absurd Zero Tolerance policy, a fake gun (perhaps even a squirt gun) is considered a weapon. Perhaps it wasn't the brightest idea to bring a toy gun to school, but what sense does it make to perhaps ruin a nine year old child's future with a 'juvie' criminal record over something any immature pre-teen boy might be inclined to do?

Essay: "Osama Can Rot in Hell"

Essay: "Osama bin Laden Can Rot in Hell"

Osama bin Laden was born into wealth, but he became so religious that he chose to live as if he was from the Middle Ages. When our government funded Afghan rebels (including bin Laden) against the Soviet Union during the 1980s the Mujahadeen warriors and Osama used those weapons and training against us in various terrorist attacks. Osama was a millionaire who apparently lived like a pauper. He was a man of great wealth who used his riches for destruction and murder rather than to make the world a better place. He was allegedly religious but he used his belief in an invisible friend in the sky as a justification to wage war, influencing thousands to become suicide bombers and terrorists, and to kill several thousand innocent Americans and Moslems alike. In the Moslem world he is practically worshipped as a hero the way Americans hero-worship professional athletes and celebrities. No matter how evil he is, for some reason many Moslems think he is a great man rather than the vermin that he actually was. He was a murderous madman. a terrorist, and the human equivalent of a tornado, tsunami, or similar natural disaster. The world is better off without people like Osama bin Laden, including fundamentalist Christians who have similar views.

Essay: "The Devout Have Faith in the Tea Party, while Atheists and Agnostics Do Not"

Essay: "The Devout Have Faith in the Tea Party, Atheists and Agnostics Do Not"

According to statistics in an article in the Saturday April 30th to May 1st weekend edition of the Patriot Ledger, so-called 'born again' and devout white Christians are most apt to buy into the extremist Tea party malarkey, while atheists and agnostics are least likely to agree with the position of low taxes for the wealthy along with minimal services for the poor, needy and vulnerable. Christians are supposed to be a charitable lot, but when it comes to political views they are quite hypocritical. At least those who are in the extreme Christian right and the Tea Party. It is a shame that due to a horrible economy and other disasters, the Tea Party and those on the right who largely caused or enabled this huge financial mess to happen have an opportunity to make things much worse; especially for those who are poor. I'm sure those at the top will do just fine and get even richer at the rest of our expense.

Essay: "Dump Trump"

Essay: "Dump Trump"

Apparently, the wealthy and arrogant egomaniac Donald Trump (aka "the Donald") is preparing to enter the Presidential election as a Republican candidate. His selling points are the following: he is a well-known billionaire and a real estate mogul. For people who don't follow politics, it wouldn't surprise me that the uninformed might vote for him based on his new role as a reality show star on "The Apprentice". Trump is coming across as brash and he is setting an early ugly tone to the upcoming race to try to defeat Obama by the Republicans who largely caused this huge economic mess with tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, cuts to needed programs for the poor and vulnerable, largely unnecessary endless wars, etc. The worse thing so far about Trump's potential candidacy is that he is perpetuating the paranoid and racist Birther lie initiated by the fringes of the extreme right-wing of the Republican party and the so-called TEA partiers. For those who might be inclined to support Trump, do they really think a guy who has so much wealth can possibly empathize with the concerns of the average person? If he gets in I'd be willing to bet that most of his policies and all of his Supreme and other court nominees would benefit Big Business to the detriment of the Common Man.

Essay: "The Royal Freeloader's Wedding"

Essay: "The Royal Freeloader's Wedding"

Sometime this week Prince William (or is it Harry?) will marry Kate Middleton and help perpetuate the antiquated British royal freeloader family. Everywhere I turn a big deal is made of this soon to be royal union in both the mainstream and tabloid press. Meanwhile, our economy is in a shambles. Our 'entitled' so-called political leaders on both sides of the aisle are eagerly preparing to shred the social safety net and perhaps destroy both Social Security and Medicare, while preserving tax cuts for corporations, millionaires and billionaires. The Tea party, which is perhaps 20% of the electorate (if that) is setting the agenda in Congress, against the best interests of the other 80% of the citizenry. As if two unnecessary wars were not draining billions of dollars from our economy, we now are fighting in three needless, unnecessary battles. Gasoline is about to cost over four dollars a gallon again, which will only worsen the hardship on the middle class and the poor and the economy in general. There is so much important stuff going on and all the media powers that be seem to care about is the British freeloader's nuptials, Lindsay Lohan, "Dancing With the Stars", Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen's meltdown and other assorted bullshit that just distracts the average person from being informed about important information (i.e. "real news") they ought to and have a right to know and care about. I'm kind of pissed off and frustrated about what is going on in this country right now.

Essay: "NY Times Sets Precedent for Charging for On-Line Content"

Essay: "The New York Times Sets a Precedent for Charging for On-line Content"

Within the last week or so the New York Times newspaper has started charging readers to access their website. Although I rarely had the time or inclination to read it that often, the Morrill Memorial Library (Norwood, MA's public library) subscribed to the NY Times in print and on-line and enabled Norwood residents with a library card to access recent and old copies of the New York Times and the Boston Globe (owned by the New York Times) for free on their computer. As of last week that is no longer the case.
I will admit that I am an on-line news deadbeat. As long as it is free, I will read news on-line. However, I may be willing to pay to read the New York Times and possibly the Boston Globe if I need to do so to access their news on-line. A lot of the time I come up with ideas for this blog while reading the Times , but I would not pay to subscribe to the paper copy because I'd have to much clutter in my apartment. On the one hand, it is a shame that computer owners cannot get the best news without paying for it; especially with how lousy our public education system is. On the other hand, as a wannabe journalist or freelance writer, I would support that readers pay for access if this is what it takes for journalism to survive; particularly since some so-called news is corporate or other kinds of deceptive propaganda.

Essay: "Who's Winning the 'Culture War' and Why

Essay: "Who's Winning the 'Culture War' and Why"

Pundits who are basically self-appointed experts on political matters, particularly those from the extreme right of the political spectrum, often talk about the so-called 'culture war(s)' going on in this country. The 'culture war' is basically a dispute between the conservative moral viewpoint and the liberal worldview. Such personalities as Bill O'Reilly (who wrote a book I didn't read entitled "Culture Warrior") and former Presidential candidate Pat Buchanon often talk about the 'Culture Wars' between all or nothing strict ultra-conservative Judeo-Christian based morality and the more relaxed Live and Let Live Liberal point of view. Under the conservative 'moral' point of view there would be restrictions or bans on abortion, birth control, contraception and the government would tend to interfere in private 'bedroom' matters. Not only that, but there would be more censorship of movies, television, radio, books, etc. On the other hand, if the Liberal moral viewpoint was winning, there would be little or no restrictions on abortion, birth control and other private bedroom matters. There would also presumably be less censorship of the airwaves by the FCC and others, books, newspapers, etc.
Unfortunately, right now the conservative and the Religious Wrong's all or nothing moral point of view is winning not because they are in the right, but because their small number of advocates (compared to the population as a whole) are more vocal and because those in the opposition do not speak up or do much of anything to counter the influence of the powerful conservative propaganda machine. On the one hand, there are some groups and individuals who are trying to fight against the right: such as and kudos to: MoveOn.com, People For the American Way, the American Civil Liberties Union (the ACLU), Jim Hightower, among others. On the other hand, a majority of us (U.S. citizens) don't care to do anything about the extreme right-wing's onslaught against the right to be left alone. Defunding Planned Parenthood, restricting abortion and contraception for moral or ideological reasons, fining television and radio stations for profanity or other supposed infractions as an excuse for censorship or the stifling of free expression. I understand that some on the right want to censor cable tv just like they now censor the non-cable stations. If the right-wing ultimately wins the so-called 'culture war(s)' it will be because a majority of us, especially those uninformed people who don't care about politics or believe "it doesn't really affect me" don't at least vote or get involved. If the right-wing wins this war, our nation will be less free and less pleasant to live in. (tbc?)

Essay: "Social Injustice"

Essay: "Social Injustice"

It shouldn't surprise anyone who is forced to take the brunt of the 'sacrifices' which deficit reduction entails. Transgressions of the rich, greedy and powerful largely caused this huge mess, but the poor and powerless are the ones who have been penalized for it. It seems that today's so-called leaders and elected politicians, especially conservative Republicans and those in the Tea Party movement, have little or no awareness or concern of the concept of Social Justice.

Essay: "U.S. Soldier Faces 22 Counts for Wikileaks Info Leaks, Could Face Death Penalty"

Essay: "U.S. Soldier Faces 22 Counts for Wikileaks Info Leaks, Could Face Death Penalty"

According to National Public Radio, a American GI faces a court martial with 22 counts for leaking confidential information to the Wikileaks website. Among these charges are: aiding the enemy, which could potentially qualify this individual for the death penalty. Although what he did was wrong, especially in time of war, I think this person is being prosecuted more for political reasons than for legal reasons. It is likely both this soldier and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange are being targeted for payback by politically powerful people for embarrassing the Federal government and perhaps exposing secrets that the powers that be do not want the average person to know.

Essay: "Ruthless Religious Sect Wins Free Speech Battle"

Essay: "Ruthless Religious Sect Wins Free Speech Battle"

In a eight to one decision, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the douchebags from the Westboro Baptist Church out of Kansas can continue to travel far and wide to disrupt the funerals of deceased soldiers and others. The Westboro protesters carry provocative placards with messages such as: "God Hates Fags", and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers", among other hateful messages. Although the so-called protesters are supposedly asserting their free speech rights, they are also using bullying, harassment and intimidation; what I consider 'verbal terrorism'. I consider their message verbal terrorism for two reasons. One, it might incite other people to violence and it might poison the minds of the young and impressionable minds against those who these phony religious hypocrites hate. Although I tend toward an agnostic or atheistic mindset, I have no problem with religious or spiritual individuals, provided they try to be better or more loving people and do not impose their morality or belief system on those who do not have the same ideology or faith.

Essay: "G.O.P. Assault on Planned Parenthood Is Counterproductive"

Essay: "G.O.P. Assault on Planned Parenthood Is Counterproductive"

Within the last week or so the Republicans and some anti-choice Democrats schemed to deny funding for the family planning organization Planned Parenthood on account of their notoriety of advocating the still legal "woman's right to choose" to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. in fact, Speaker of the House John Boehner falsely claimed that denying funding for Planned Parenthood was "the will of the people." (other than rabid social conservatives). On the other hand, advising women whether or not to assert that right is just one part of Planned Parenthood's mission. Not only does Planned Parenthood offer abortion services, but it offers ' family planning' (contraceptives), HIV and STD testing, and other reproductive and similar health services at a nominal cost. This financial assault by anti-choice extremists will affect thousands if not millions of people who choose and have the legal right to choose contraceptives and similar services. Unless or until contraceptives (birth control) are outlawed by Congress or the courts anti-choice zealots have no business denying such services to couples and/or individuals, especially in these tough economic times. Also, if contraceptive funding is denied, more abortions, not less will certainly be performed. I guarantee that voters will remember this outrage and vote accordingly in the next and subsequent elections.

Essay: "U.S. House Tries to Defund NPR and PBS"

Essay: U.S. House Attempts to Defund NPR and PBS"

It should come as no surprise that the entire Republican delegation of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to defund National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). NPR and PBS often tell both the liberal and conservative side of the story. On the other hand, Fox News (which ironically claims to be "Fair and Balanced") and right-wing talk radio usually tells just the ultra-conservative viewpoint, and when a liberal panelist appears or caller calls in they are usually shouted down before they can have their say. Without NPR and PBS millions of Americans will only get the oft deceptive right-wing vantage point when they watch or listen to news. Although NPR and PBS pledge breaks are annoying ,if you want to continue to be able to hear reliable news and not right-wing propaganda call or write your U.S. Senators to retain funding for NPR and PBS.

Essay: "Breaking the Backs of the Poor Over Deficit Reduction"

Essay: " Breaking the Backs of the Poor and Vulnerable Over Deficit Reduction"

Prominent politicians from both major parties are declaring: "we all must share in the sacrifice in order to achieve 'deficit reduction'. What a load of horse manure! Sure something must be done, but why should the poor and vulnerable be the ones to endure the onus of those cuts. It isn't the poor and vulnerable who caused this mess. It was politically expedient decisions such as two unnecessary 'endless wars', a bloated secret shadow government known as the Department of Homeland Security, and tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires and corporate welfare for corporations eager to send American jobs abroad to save money and increase their so-called bottom line, while destroying the American Dream and the economy to boot. Likewise, Wall Street and what others call "banksters" continue their bonuses and lavish compensation packages for those at the top, economy be damned. Why isn't it that those who caused this mess foot the bill or the penalty to fix things? Also, if politicians, especially those on the right wing are so eager to cut benefits and services to those who truly need them (poor, homeless, sick, vulnerable, etc.) why aren't they willing to cut their own pay and undeserved benefits? Perhaps in trying to 'fix' things, they will instead destroy the lives of poor constituents and the nation they claim to serve.

Essay: "Smoker's Rights?"

Essay: " Smoker's Rights?"

In the last week or so a big to-do was made about whether government officials could restrict smoking at places like Boston Common or the beach, among other places. Normally I would oppose the long arm of the law regulating perfectly legal activities, but in the case of smoking I would make an exception. First of all, if used as suggested smoking will eventually wreck the health and/or kill the smoker with lung cancer, emphysema, or Common Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), among other ailments. To make matters worse, bystanders health or lives can also be affected or cut short through second-hand smoke. I work at a job where I have no choice but to walk around smokers selfishly puffing away. If it was up to me they wouldn't have the right to smoke around me. Smokers may have their so-called rights, but the rights of those who choose to breathe untainted air should always trump the rights of selfish smoke fiends.

Essay: "You May Not Be Able To Buy Love But You Can Certainly Buy Elections"

Essay: " You May Not Be Able To Buy Love, But You Can Certainly Buy Elections"

With the wrongheaded, right-wing, reprehensible Supreme Court decision on the Citizen's United case, it proves you may not be able to buy love but you can certainly buy elections. (tbc)
All three branches of government appear to be bought and paid for. The wants of corporations and the Super Rich 1 or 2% of the population take precedence over the basic needs of the other 98% or so. The needs of the most vulnerable of us are particularly at risk... (tbc) Due to greedy banks, Wall Street types, two unnecessary wars, a bloated Dept. of Homeland Security, and other needless boondoggles, the Federal government is eager to cut necessary programs people actually need while giving millionaires and billionaires "permanent tax cuts"; not to mention corporate welfare and tax breaks for businesses that outsource jobs overseas for cheap labor and refuse to create new jobs here.
Paraphrasing the "Declaration of Independence" : "There are certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness... whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government..." Something like that is happening right now in Tunis and Egypt. Since our Federal government is now apparently a corporat(e)ocracy or a plutocracy (government by the rich), our government has little or no concern for the needy, vulnerable, or the have-nots. When our government pays little or no heed to the hungry, homeless, jobless, or allows people to suffer needlessly to save money, then our own government should be "altered or abolished" in the not too distant future.

Essay: "Untruths About the Single Payer Bugaboo"

Essay: Untruths and Outright Deceptions About the Single Payer Bugaboo"

I have always supported a Single Payer health care system for USA-ll. After receiving a letter by the political organization Public Citizen with information on "Myths and Lies about Single Payer..." I am more convinced than ever that we ought to scrap the current HMO and for-profit health insurance system and immediately transition to a Canadian-style Single Payer system. According to the letter from Public Citizen, "Single Payer" is not so-called "Socialized Medicine" although every Republican claims otherwise to deceive the populous. If we changed to a Single Payer system we would all get a card which would entitle any U.S. citizen to go to any private physician or hospital of our choice. By the way, doctors would not become employed by the government, though the G.O.P. claim otherwise.
Also according to the letter I received this week, "Single Payer" will not lead to so-called "rationing" at least when compared to the highly flawed system we currently have. As you probably know, the for-profit system we unfortunately have absolutely "rations care" in that in many cases without insurance or adequate insurance you either are not allowed to get health care or you are financially responsible to an exorbitant extent; up to and including bankruptcy. According to the letter, more than one hundred American citizens perish every day due to lack of insurance under our ruthless for-profit system. Reprehensible as our for-profit system is, at least 36,500 people die annually due to lack of insurance. In addition, a lot of the time care is denied to the sick or dying so the American insurance companies can maximize profits. Guess how many people die in our neighbor to the north (Canada) due to lack of health insurance. The answer is "zero".
According to the letter from Public Citizen, if the for-profit "health insurance industry" was deep-sixed, there would be hundreds of "billions" of dollars saved annually in business "costs" and "profits". Instead of going to greedy insurance executives and unnecessary 'gecko, caveman or Mr. Mayhem' advertisements and maximizing profits instead of helping the sick, all that money could be utilized to keep us healthy, catch potential health problems sooner with preventive care, and perhaps lengthen lifespans.
According to the letter from Public Citizen, prescription drugs and research would cost less than they do now under a Single Payer system. If done correctly, a Single Payer system should cover more care for most U.S. Citizens. The letter says there would be "no more bills, deductibles, or co-pays." Of course, taxes would go up somewhat, but it would not likely be more than the typical person currently pays in insurance, if covered.
Although those in the for-profit health insurance industry may lose, any industry that is indifferent to the pain, suffering or demise of the sick ought to be done away with. In fact, such a system should have met its demise a long time ago. (tbc?) For more information, go to www.citizen.org. By the way, I am not a member of Public Citizen.

Essay: "You Are SOL 2"

Essay: You're SOL 2"

It is apparent that the Wrongheaded Right-Wing Republicans are willing to stop at almost nothing to try to repeal Obamacare. Sure, the Tea Party tend to be against it, as are most diehard conservatives. However, most people support the new health care law's provision against denying care based on "pre-existing conditions". It is disgusting that HMOs and insurance companies of all kinds keep raising rates and keep enriching their top executives while the majority of people's health and finances suffer. It is also a disgrace that millions of Americans can't afford health coverage and others who have it can't risk getting sick. Obamacare is far from perfect. In fact, in my view it doesn't go far enough in the "Single Payer" direction . On the other hand, it at least tries to do something about healthcare inequities and insurance co. abuses in this country. The GOP intend to continue skyrocketing insurance premium increases, which few can afford. American political leaders in general and the elected GOP in particular don't seem to give a damn if you have no health insurance or inadequate coverage; so long as we don't have alleged 'Socialistic healthcare'. What we have is a broken system, which could potentially literally bankrupt both the government and the majority of citizens. Whether out of ideological zeal, enmity toward Democrats, a strategy to unseat Obama in the nest election, or just plain being ornery, the Republican plan (if there is one) is against the best interests of the nation and the majority of the citizenry. (tbc?)

Essay: "Are Two Billionaires Responsible For Tea Party Success and GOP Resurgence?"

Essay: " Are Two Billionaire Siblings Responsible For Tea Party Successes and GOP Resurgence?"

According to the late edition of the Monday January 31st New York Times, an exclusive meeting set up by the secretive billionaire Koch brothers at an exclusive California resort was crashed by hundreds of liberal "protesters" (New York Times, Jan. 31, 2011, p.10). This meeting was exclusively for rich elites, perhaps some powerful politicians or their supporters or minions, and may even have had certain right-wing Supreme Court Justices as invitees. The Justices may have improperly voted for the notorious "Citizen's United" case, which disregarded decades of previous Supreme Court decisions in order to allow unlimited and anonymous political donations, even for billionaires and corporations. By the way, these two wrongheaded, right-wing conservative Supreme Court Justices are friends of the Koch brothers and have attended previous such meetings. In my opinion, based on the two Justices relationship to the brothers Koch "Citizens United" should be invalidated or be voted against by Congress or We the People.
If you want more information on the Koch brothers read the Hightower Lowdown and/or the Washington Spectator newslettters. The brothers Koch appear to be spawn of nepotism (likely inherited wealth) who spend millions and millions of dollars to fund right-wing causes purportedly in their own business self-interest. They are basically the men who supplied the bulk of the funding of the Tea Party propaganda movement, which motivated millions of people to vote against their own self-interest in the previous election. They epitomize why plutocracy (government by the rich) is hazardous to our freedoms, our health, our environment, and our collective future(s) as individuals and as a nation. I doubt it will happen, but due to financial bullies like them, campaigns should severely limit donations unless each inidividual citizen (and corporations are not people) is represented equally. It is unfortunate that politicians pay heed to the wealthy like bees are attracted to honey. (tbc?)

Essay: "The Shooting in Arizona"

Essay: "The Shooting in Arizona"

With the relentless anti-liberal vitriol erupting from the media and airwaves by such bullying, ignorant louts as Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Anne Coulter, Sarah Palin, Fox News, and numerous others, it should come as no surprise that an "unstable loner" took potshots at and nearly succeeded in attempting to assassinate a Democratic Congresswoman in Arizona. These so-called pundits might as well have supplied the bullets and the gun to the would-be assassin who ended up killing s number of people including a nine year old girl who was ironically born on the tragic date of September 11, 2001.
